Net Zero Waste: Zero Waste Festival

13 Sept 2024 • Written By Lilian Xu

With the Zero Waste Festival coming this Saturday, it’s the perfect time to dive into the broader waste challenges we face in Australia and explore the amazing initiatives making a real impact in reducing waste across all sectors. For those unfamiliar with the festival, it’s an annual event dedicated to tackling the issues of waste, recycling, and sustainability in our communities. From engaging talks, a clothes swap, to a repair café, the festival offers valuable insights and practical ways to embrace sustainable living - a chance to connect, learn, and take meaningful steps towards a zero-waste future.

As you may already know, Ludis has been fortunate enough to contribute to this amazing initiative! We’ll be hosting a range of interactive games and activities to raise awareness about waste in the sporting industry. This includes a ‘Guess How Much This Weighs’ competition, demonstrating the staggering amount of sporting ball waste generated each year. The winner will also receive a prize courtesy of our partnership with Dunlop! We’ll also have some of our latest shoe designs on display, including a 3D printed model. Plus, if you have any old sports balls lying around, bring them down and we'll happily get them recycled for you!

Other incredible stalls we’re excited to check out include:

  • Pharmacycle: Australia’s first and only recycling program for household and commercial medicinal blister pack waste (I have a blister pack or 2 from my recent flus so will be sure to drop them off with Pharmacycle).

  • Result Group: A packaging company introducing their latest cutting-edge laser technology that "tattoos" high-resolution images onto fresh produce, reducing the need for stickers and minimising waste (this is such a smart idea, and I absolutely love the idea of fruits with tattoos!).

  • Our fellow Monash friends - Precious Plastic Monash will also be making an appearance and we’re super excited to see what they’ve been getting up to! This is one of my favourite student-led engineering teams at Monash, who are dedicated to reducing plastic waste (head to their website to see the incredible products they’ve made out of plastic, including a PPM skateboard!).

  • And lastly, for a tasty treat, I’m super excited to try CREPES FOR CHANGE—Australia’s first not-for-profit food truck. They serve delicious sweet and savoury crepes while investing 100% of their profits into programs to help end youth homelessness. Its a win-win, great food for a great cause!

Hopefully we'll see you there!
